Oscar winners are obviously enough the crème de la crème of movies. However despite our best intentions to see these films in the cinema when they come out we normally don’t get the chance and suddenly its three years later and you still haven’t seen the “best film ever”. However Netflix once again have come to our aid with a list of some of the top Oscar winners to choose from. Here’s selection of our top picks.


Milk is a biographical film based on the life of gay rights activist and politician Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California. It begins on Harvey Milk’s (Sean Penn) 40th birthday and chronicles his journey into city politics and his campaigns to address the curtailment of rights of gay people in the seventies across America. It received eight Academy Award nominations, , winning two for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Original Screenplay.

The Help

The Help is a drama film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Kathryn Stockett. Set in Jackson, Mississippi it tells the story of Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan (Emma Stone), and her relationship with two black maids, Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson during Civil Rights era America. Attempting to fulfil her ambitions to become a journalist, Skeetar decides to write a book from the point of view of the maids, exposing the racism they are faced with as they work for white families. It received four Academy Awards nominations, winning for the Best Supporting Actress.

Good Will Hunting

Good Will Hunting which was written by and stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, and with Damon follows 20-year-old South Boston labourer Will Hunting (Damon), an unrecognized genius who is discovered after solving theorems meant for the students of a renowned mathematician professor. Following a deferred prosecution agreement after assaulting a police officer, becomes a patient of a therapist and studies advanced mathematics with a the professor . Through his therapy sessions, Will re-evaluates his relationships and future. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning two: Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

Eternal Sunshine of a spotless mind

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a romantic science fiction thriller film about an withdrawn Joel Barish (Jim Carey) and free spirit Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) who are drawn to each other during a train journey not realising that are in fact an estranged couple who had each other erased from their memorie. The films quirky combination of science fiction, psychological thriller, and nonlinear narrative explores the nature of memory and romantic love. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, winning for Best Original Screenplay.

Rain man

Rain Man is a comedy-drama film depicting the story of a selfish yuppie, Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise), who discovers that upon his estranged father death that the entire estate has being bequeathed to his brother Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) who is autistic and whose existence Charlie was unaware of. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning four includingBest Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Leading Role.


Capote is a biographical film about Truman Capote, following the events during the writing of Capote’s non-fiction book In Cold Blood. Fascinated by the gruesome murders of the Clutter family in Kansas, Capote (Philip Seymour Hoffman) decides to document the tragedy. While he begins by interviewing those close to the victims, ultimately he forms an attachment to one of the accused Smith. The film won an Academy Award for Best Actor for Seymour Hoffman’s portrayal of the title role.
