House of Cards

House of Cards is an American political drama set in Washington D.C. It tells the story of Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), a Democrat and House Majority Whip who decided to exact his revenge on those who thwarted his appointment as Secretary of State. In 2013 it received nine Emmy Award nominations along with four Golden Globe nominations. The entire second season is now available to stream and Netflix has announced it will be renewed for a third season.

Orange is the New Black

Orange is the New Black is an American comedy drama series based on Piper Kerman’s memoir, Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, about her experience of prison. The series revolved around Piper Chapmen (Taylor Schilling), a woman living in New York who is sentenced to 15 months in a women’s federal prison for transporting drug money ten years previously to her former girlfriend, who is a drug smuggler. In prison Piper is forced to confront life amongst her tough inmates and her ex-girlfriend.

Hemlock Grove

Hemlock Grove is an American horror series based on McGreevy’s2013 novel Hemlock Grove. The series examines the strange goings on in a fictional town set in Pennsylvania. The heir of the wealty Godfrey family Roman Godfrey becomes friends with newcomer Peter Rumancek. Hiding their own secrets the pair work together to solve the town’s recent brutal murders. The second season is set to air 2014 although no official date has been set. Hemlock Grove also earned an Emmy nomination in 2013.


The first original Netflix series Lilyhammer is a gripping television series set in Norway. The series features Frank Tagliano (Steven van Zandt) a New York gangster who has been exiled to isolated Lillehammer in Norway as part of a witness protection programme. However in Lillehammer he continues his old ways, using blackmail and violence to gain influence in the criminal underworld. The first two seasons are already streaming on Netflix with the third set to air in 2014.

Marco Polo

Marco Polo is a new series set to air late 2014. The nine episode series is set in 13th century China and will centre on Marco Polo’s early years in the court of Kublai Khan. The directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, who will direct the next instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean, will be directing the pilot episode of Marco Polo.
